An 80-year-old Chicago man shot one of two home invaders who physically attacked him Monday morning, authorities told WMAQ-TV.

What are the details?

The man was inside a home in the 8500 block of West Catherine Avenue, which is near O’Hare International Airport, when two people knocked on the front door around 10:30 a.m., police told the station.

When the man opened the door, the two people “made entry without permission,” police noted to WMAQ.

At that point the man and the two intruders began fighting, with the man getting hit several times, the station said.

But the victim had something on hand that evened things out considerably. The man pulled his gun and fired it, hitting one of the intruders — a man — in the chest, WMAQ said. The other alleged intruder, a woman, was not injured, authorities added to the station.

WMAQ said the victim holds a Firearm Owners Identification card.

What happened next?

The two intruders fled the scene and headed to Resurrection Hospital for medical treatment, the station said, adding that the shot male was listed in critical condition. Both of the suspects were listed in custody, and police told WMAQ that charges were pending.

The homeowner was “battered and sustained several injuries throughout the body,” police told the station, adding that he was taken to an area hospital in critical condition.

‘Everybody should be able to defend themselves’

Kevin Wilhite, a neighbor of the elderly victim, told WMAQ the event “was pretty shocking. We’ve had some vandalism, some theft issues in the area in the last couple years, but nothing like that.”

Wilhite also praised the victim’s courage and his exercise of his Second Amendment rights.

“I think it’s great,” Wilhite added to the station. “And I think that everybody should be able to defend themselves within reason, so … having something in your home, it’s not a bad idea, especially if you live in a first-floor walkup apparently like this guy did. You can see that had he not, it might have gone the other way.”

Wilhite also told WMAQ, “I do salute his bravery, especially at his age, to be able to take on two people.”
