Moving & Packing Tips
• Use large boxes for light items and smaller boxes for heavier items.
• Small boxes are suggested for books, which should be packed flat to protect their spines.
• Write or use labels on the sides of boxes, not on the tops.
• Store high value items toward the back of your storage unit in unmarked boxes.
• If you’re going to be storing your belongings long term, put your items into plastic totes instead of boxes.
• Put a dryer sheets in each box, so if you need to grab a winter jacket, or a specific item, it will smell fresh and clean like you just washed it.
• Use lamp boxes for golf clubs, baby strollers, fishing poles, – these can be purchased at most SPS locations
• Use shrink wrap around furniture pieces with drawers. Makes for easier transport.
• Wrap boxes in shrink-wrap. Creates a moisture proof seal.
• Do not store toasters, blenders, microwaves or other kitchen appliances without a thorough cleaning. Food can attract pests.
• Utilize large items for extra storage space. For example, refrigerators, freezers and washers are perfect for storing soft items such as linens, towels & clothing.
• Wrap dishes and glassware individually, and pad the box with packing paper or bubble-wrap. It’s best to store plates on their sides.
• Take special care when packing mirrors, windows and screens. Mirror packs or strong cardboard help prevent damage.
• Store shoes and other misc. items in the bottom of wardrobe boxes where there is some dead space.
• DampRid, or similar product are an affordable, effective way of eliminating moisture and mustiness and is especially effective in humid climates. It is proven to absorb excess moisture from the air.
• Put cardboard or a dust cover on the floor will prevent items from getting scuffed.
• Always use a mattress or sofa cover. It’s worth the $4-$5 to protect items that cost hundreds from dust, humidity, pests, etc.
• Protect furniture, including mattresses and box springs, with plastic covers, and stand on end.
• Using the height of the unit to their advantage, stand couches up vertically to maximize space (only if for short-term storage).
• Using a desk or table right side up, they can store under and on top for more space.
• Stacking uniform size boxes helps maximize your available space. Don’t stack higher than you can comfortably reach.
• Leave access space in front of your unit, and keep your frequently used items where you can easily reach them.
